Sigiriya means "Lions Rock", the name is derived from the entrance to the palace, when the fortress was built a gigantic brick lion sat at the final ascent to the summit. To get to the palace one has to climb up between the lions paws and into it's mouth. However today what is left of this gigantic lion is its paws and the first steps.
