At No 1 on my list of places you must go to in Sri Lanka is the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
Dating back over 2500 years this Ancient city is full of the remenence of the great hydro civilisation that thrived there. You could spend hours walking or cycling through some of ancient sri Lankas most magnificent structures and places of both great historic and religious significance. Anuradhapura also known to the locals as the land of the great kings is home to the 3rd tallest ancient world structure. The area is scattered with mega stupas and huge man made lakes. At No 2 in my top 10 places to visit in Sri Lanka is the hill capital of Kandy. Kandy is one of the cleanest and most scenic towns in Sri Lanka. Kandy is located at tye heart of sri Lanka and is visited daily by 1000's of local and foreign travellers and Pilgrims. Kandy is home to the temple of the tooth. Which is possibly the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. Find out more information on kandy here

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is probably the most iconic landmarks of Sri Lanka, visited by thousands of people on a daily basis. It is one of the eight world heritage sights in Sri Lanka. Built in the 5th Century AD, Sigiriya was nominated to be the 8th wonder of the ancient world, and with good reason.

Dambulla Cave Temple or the Golden Temple of Dambulla (Rangiri Dambulla in Sinhala) is one of the eight World Heritage spots in Sri Lanka.
Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka, it is spread over 5 separate caves. Home to hundreds of ancient statues, and amazing paintings some dating as far back as the 1st century BC. As the temple was preserved by the Kings of Sri Lanka over the ages, you can see the changing nature of Sri Lankan art over time, with some paintings dating as near as the late 18th century.
Located in North Central Sri Lanka, it is around 150 KM from the capital Colombo. The temple it self is located around 500 meters from the city centre of Dambulla.

Galle Fort

Galle was founded by the portugese in the 16th Centuary and ever since has been a major port in Sri Lanka. The center peice of attraction in Galle is the Fort. It was originally built by the Portugese and then later expanded by the Dutch. Giving the fort around 400 years of history. The Galle fort is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.
It is home to great number of remarkably well preserved Dutch VOC buildings. It is also the best example of a Fortified European settlement in South Asia.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Orphanage was opened in 1975 by the Sri Lankan department of wildlife. It currently occupies an area of 24 acres, and has the worlds largest herd of captive elephants. Pinnawala cares for many young orphaned elephants as well as acting as a breeding centre for elephants.

Yala National Park is located in the deep south of Sri Lanka. It is perhaps the most well known and spoken about National Park in Sri Lanka. Its fame stems from its most treasured inhabitant, the Leopard. Yala has the worlds highest density of wild Leopards, which makes it highly likely to see one.

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is located 180km east of the capital Colombo. It is situated 6 128 feet above sea level, at the heart of the central hills of Sri Lanka. The region has an all year round pleasant climate of around 12-20 degrees Celsius during the day and 5-10 degrees Celsius during the night. You may want to pack a jumper or something warm, if you plan to visit the city.
